About Collegiate Church of Saint-Ours
The Collegiate Church of Saint-Ours stands on a rocky promontory in the upper town of Loches, next to the royal lodge where Charles VII held court. Built between the 11th and 12th centuries, this Romanesque church is defined by its two hollow octagonal pyramidal spires — called "dubes" — that cover the nave, a roofing system found nowhere else in France. The main portal, dating to around 1150, retains traces of its original medieval polychrome paint and depicts fantastical animals alongside an unusual representation of the seven liberal arts.

The church was originally called Notre-Dame de Loches for most of its history. It only received the name "Saint-Ours" after the French Revolution, when it absorbed the dedication of a different, ruined church that had stood inside the fortress below. The actual Saint Ours — a 5th-century hermit — never had a church named after him on this site during the medieval period.
