About Royal Lodgings of Loches
The Logis Royal de Loches is a medieval and Renaissance royal residence perched on a rocky outcrop above the Indre Valley in the Loire region. Built in the late 14th century by Louis I, Duke of Anjou, and expanded under Charles VIII and Louis XII around 1500, it served as a favored retreat for the Valois kings during the Hundred Years' War. Charles VII held court here regularly from 1418, and in May 1429 Joan of Arc arrived at Loches to convince him to march to Reims for his coronation.

Agnes Sorel's remains were scientifically examined in 2005 and found to contain unusually high levels of mercury. Whether this indicates deliberate poisoning or the use of mercury-based cosmetics and medicines common in the 15th century remains an open question among historians.
