About Cordeliers Gate
The Porte des Cordeliers is a late 15th-century fortified city gate built around 1497, forming part of Loches' third defensive wall. Named after a nearby Franciscan convent, it controlled the road toward Beaulieu-lès-Loches and sat on the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. The gate features a rounded-arch carriage passage alongside a smaller pedestrian opening, two corner turrets with corbelling, and a crenellated parapet walk with machicolations.

The Porte des Cordeliers is the youngest of Loches' surviving medieval gates. Built in 1497, it postdates the Porte Picois and Porte Royale by several centuries. Its construction date was confirmed through dendrochronology — the scientific analysis of tree rings in its timber framework.
