About Loches Saint-Antoine Tower
The Tour Saint-Antoine is a 52-metre Renaissance bell tower built between 1529 and 1575, the only surviving Renaissance belfry in the Touraine province. Originally constructed as the bell tower for a chapel dedicated to Saint Antoine, the church was demolished during the French Revolution while the tower remained standing. The square base rises through largely blind lower floors to an open belfry stage with twin arched bays on each face, then transitions to an octagonal dome topped by a lantern.

The tower was included in France's very first national inventory of historic monuments in 1840, compiled by Prosper Mérimée (better known as the author of the novella Carmen). Only about 1,000 buildings across all of France made that original list, placing the Tour Saint-Antoine among the country's earliest officially protected structures.
