About Loches Royal Gate
The Porte Royale is the sole monumental gateway into the fortified citadel of Loches, one of the best-preserved medieval walled cities in the Loire Valley. Built in the 13th century and reinforced in the 15th century with machicolations and cannon platforms, the gate served as the primary defensive entrance to the royal compound. Its square tower flanked by two rounded towers still bears visible traces of successive construction phases, from the Romanesque base to late-medieval military adaptations for gunpowder warfare.

The slot for the original drawbridge mechanism is still visible in the gate's stonework. When the drawbridge was raised, the only way into the citadel was completely sealed, making Loches one of the most impregnable fortresses in the Touraine region during the Hundred Years' War.
