About Châteaudun Old Town
The old town of Châteaudun sits on a limestone promontory above the Loir River, centered around the castle and the Place du 18 Octobre. The historic quarter splits into two distinct areas: a medieval section along Rue Saint-Lubin with 15th- and 16th-century half-timbered houses that survived the great fire of 1723, and a classical 18th-century grid rebuilt under Louis XV by architect Jules-Michel-Alexandre Hardouin. The town holds 58 classified or registered monuments within a compact area.

On June 20, 1723, a fire broke out that burned for eight consecutive days and destroyed three-quarters of the town, including three churches and five public buildings. The medieval quarter near the castle along Rue Saint-Lubin was largely spared, which is why the town today displays two strikingly different architectural periods side by side.
