About Châteaudun Saint-Valérien Church
Saint-Valérien Church is a classified Historic Monument in Châteaudun, built across three centuries from the 12th to the 16th. The Romanesque choir dates to the 1100s, while the nave received Gothic sexpartite vaults in the 13th century, supported by columns with carved human and animal heads. A five-story bell tower topped with a crocketed stone spire rises roughly 50 meters above the town, making it one of the most visible landmarks alongside the château.

The church holds a large painting of the Descent from the Cross attributed to Quentin Varin (c.1575-1626), who was the direct teacher of Nicolas Poussin — one of France's most celebrated classical painters. The canvas measures roughly 4 meters in height and was itself classified as a historic monument in 2014, independently from the church building.
