About Châteaudun Church of the Magdalene
This former Augustinian abbey church dates from the 12th century, founded in 1120 by Thibault IV, Count of Blois and Dunois. Originally stretching about 80 metres long, it was the largest religious building in the historic County of Dunois. The south portal, with its finely carved Romanesque voussures, is the highlight — it spent centuries hidden behind the city's medieval ramparts and was only rediscovered during 19th-century works.

The south portal was literally entombed inside the city's defensive rampart wall for several hundred years. When 19th-century construction works required modifying the fortifications, workers broke through and found the carved Romanesque archivolts perfectly preserved behind the masonry, as if sealed in a time capsule.
