About Vendôme Church of Saint Mary Magdalene
This Flamboyant Gothic church was founded on June 2, 1474, by Jean VIII, Count of Vendôme, with backing from local guilds of vintners and market gardeners. The 47-metre nave features a carved wooden ceiling shaped like an inverted ship's hull, one of the building's most distinctive elements. A 65-metre stone bell tower with an octagonal drum dominates the church exterior and marks the city skyline.

The church was not built by royal or clerical command. It was funded and supported by trade guilds of vintners and market gardeners who cultivated the surrounding lands. The statue of Saint Fiacre inside the church is a direct tribute to these founding gardeners — Fiacre is the patron saint of gardeners and vegetable growers in the Catholic tradition.
