About Trinity Abbey of Vendôme
The Trinity Abbey is a Benedictine monastery founded in 1033-1040 by Count Geoffroy Martel after he reportedly witnessed three shooting stars fall into a fountain — a sign he interpreted as the Holy Trinity. The abbey church combines Romanesque and Gothic elements built over several centuries, with its flamboyant Gothic facade completed in 1506 by Jean de Beauce, the same architect who built the north tower of Chartres Cathedral. A freestanding 12th-century Romanesque bell tower rises 80 metres beside the church, completely detached from the main building — a rare configuration in French religious architecture.

From 1063, every abbot elected at the Trinity Abbey automatically received the title of cardinal — a privilege granted directly by the pope, bypassing Rome's usual appointment process. Only a handful of religious institutions in all of Christendom held this extraordinary right.
