About Vendôme Saint-Martin Square
Place Saint-Martin is the central square of Vendôme's old town, created in 1856 on the site of a demolished medieval parish church. The square is dominated by the 50-meter Tour Saint-Martin, a 15th-century bell tower that survived the church's demolition and has served as the town belfry since the French Revolution. Its carillon plays a medieval melody referencing cities held by the Dauphin Charles VII during the Hundred Years' War.

The original bronze statue of Rochambeau was seized by Nazi occupying forces in 1942 and melted down for its non-ferrous metals. The statue only reappeared in 1974, recast with financial help from the American Society of the Cincinnati — an organization of descendants of officers who served in the Revolutionary War alongside Rochambeau.
