About Vendôme Saint George's Gate

The Porte Saint-Georges is the sole surviving gate of the four that once controlled access to medieval Vendôme, serving as the main southern entrance to the walled city. Built in phases between the 14th and 16th centuries, it features two flanking towers with machicolations from the Hundred Years' War era, topped by Renaissance medallions and sculpted ornamentation commissioned by Marie de Luxembourg, Dowager Countess of Vendôme, in the early 1500s. In 1467, Count Jean VIII ceded the gate to the city's aldermen, transforming it into a town hall — a role it still fulfills today, hosting municipal council meetings and civil wedding ceremonies.

The sculpted dolphins visible on the Renaissance medallions are attributed to Marie de Luxembourg's patronage. In Renaissance heraldic tradition, dolphins symbolized wisdom and were frequently used by French nobility. The combination of these delicate decorative elements with the heavy military machicolations below them creates one of the most striking contrasts of medieval-to-Renaissance transition architecture in the Loire Valley.
