About Church of Saint Stephen of Romorantin
The Church of Saint Stephen is the oldest building in Romorantin-Lanthenay, with foundations dating back to before the 10th century. Originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary (Notre-Dame), the church was later rededicated to Saint Stephen and has accumulated layers of Romanesque, Gothic, and Renaissance architecture over the centuries. Louise of Savoy, mother of King Francis I, funded four Renaissance chapels around 1510-1520 when the royal court resided in Romorantin.

The decorative carvings on the Renaissance chapels closely resemble those on the famous staircase at the Château de Chambord, located just 40 km away. This suggests the same workshops or craftsmen worked on both buildings during the early 16th century.
