About Romorantin-Lanthenay Old Town
The old town of Romorantin-Lanthenay stretches along both banks of the Sauldre river in the heart of the Sologne region. Its narrow streets contain one of the densest concentrations of timber-framed houses in the Centre-Val de Loire, with several buildings classified as historic monuments dating from the 15th and 16th centuries. The Carroir Doré intersection forms the symbolic center, where three consecutive listed buildings stand along Rue de la Résistance: the Chancellerie, the Carroir Doré house, and the Hôtel Saint-Pol (also called Maison François Ier).

In 1516, King Francis I commissioned Leonardo da Vinci to design a royal palace and an entirely new city here, intended to rival Rome itself. Construction actually began in 1517 with a 400-meter raised terrace along the Sauldre and canal excavations. The project was abandoned in 1519 after da Vinci's death, and the king redirected his ambitions to building Chambord instead.
