About Chartres Church of Saint-Aignan
The Church of Saint-Aignan sits on one of the oldest parish sites in Chartres, with Christian worship here dating back to approximately 400 AD. The current building was constructed between 1514 and 1624, blending Renaissance and late Gothic architectural styles. Its most notable feature is the collection of 16th and 17th-century Renaissance stained glass windows, which visitors can view at close range — a sharp contrast to the distant medieval glass in the nearby Cathedral.

Of the eleven parishes that existed in Chartres before the French Revolution, Saint-Aignan is the only one that was re-established after the upheaval. During the Revolution, the church was seized and used successively as a military hospital, a prison, and a hay storage facility before returning to worship in 1822-1823.
