About Chartres Saint-André Collegiate Church
The Collégiale Saint-André is a 12th-century Romanesque church built on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman amphitheater, located along the banks of the Eure River in Chartres' lower town. Elevated to collegiate status in 1108 by Bishop Saint Yves, the church features a distinctive western facade with an arched portal in the Saintonge style. Its most remarkable engineering achievement is the choir, constructed on a massive 14-meter arch spanning the river — later widened around 1520 to support six lateral chapels above the water.

The church sits directly on the ruins of a Gallo-Roman amphitheater from the ancient city of Autricum. Remains of the amphitheater walls are still visible in the crypts. During excavations in 2013 at the adjacent Casanova block, archaeologists uncovered painted murals depicting hunting scenes and gladiatorial combat, confirming that spectacles took place at this exact location nearly 2,000 years ago.
