About Chartres Saint-Pierre Church
The Church of Saint-Pierre stands on the site of a Benedictine abbey founded in the 7th century by Queen Bathilde, wife of Clovis II. The current structure dates primarily from the 12th and 13th centuries, built in stages after repeated fires destroyed earlier buildings. Its western bell tower, dating to around 1000 AD, is the oldest surviving element and predates Chartres Cathedral by nearly two centuries.

The abbey was founded by Queen Bathilde, a freed Anglo-Saxon slave who rose to become Queen of the Franks and later a saint. Her extraordinary life story — from captive to queen to monastic founder — makes this one of the few French churches directly tied to a former slave's patronage.
