About Collegiate Church of Saint-Aignan of Orléans
The Collegiate Church of Saint-Aignan stands on one of the oldest continuously sacred Christian sites in Orléans, dating back to the 5th century when Bishop Aignan was buried here after his role in defending the city against Attila the Hun in 451 AD. The current upper church is a Flamboyant Gothic structure from the 15th-16th century, featuring over 250 sculpted capitals and vaulting reaching 22 metres high. Its greatest treasure lies below ground: a Romanesque crypt consecrated by King Robert the Pious in 1029, measuring 22 by 17 metres with barrel vaults supported by two rows of columns.

Bishop Aignan's defence of Orléans against Attila the Hun in 451 AD contributed directly to Attila's defeat at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains near Troyes — one of the most decisive battles in Western history that halted the Hun advance into Europe. At the time, Orléans was far more strategically important than Paris.
