About Halles Châtelet Market
The Halles Châtelet is Orléans' main covered food market, located on Place du Châtelet in the city centre. The building houses around 50 vendors, including about 30 food specialists — butchers, fishmongers, cheese makers, bakers, and fruit and vegetable sellers — alongside non-food shops and services. Markets have operated on this site since the Middle Ages, though the current glass-and-aluminium structure dates from 1975, replacing an earlier iron-and-glass hall built between 1882 and 1887 in the style of Paris's Baltard pavilions.

The original 1882-1887 market hall required demolishing an entire medieval neighbourhood block. Mayor Charles Sanglier pushed the project through despite strong opposition from heritage preservationists who wanted to save the old buildings.
