About Martroi Square
The main square of Orléans and the symbolic heart of the city, fully pedestrianized since 2013. At its center stands an 1855 bronze equestrian statue of Joan of Arc by sculptor Denis Foyatier, depicting her with sword lowered in a gesture of gratitude rather than triumph. The square's name derives from the Latin 'martyretum' (place of martyrs), likely referencing an ancient Gallo-Roman cemetery that once occupied the site.

After WWII bombs broke Joan of Arc's sword on the statue, the American Army specifically funded the creation of a new sword during the 1950 restoration. The city of New Orleans, Louisiana, also contributed financially — a transatlantic solidarity rooted in the two cities sharing both a name and a connection to Joan of Arc.
