About Orléans Cathedral
Orléans Cathedral sits on a site of Christian worship dating back to the 4th century, though the current Gothic structure was begun in 1287 and took over 540 years to complete. The building suffered near-total destruction in 1568 when Huguenot forces blew up the transept pillars during the Wars of Religion. Henri IV launched a full reconstruction in 1601, and every French monarch from Henri IV to Charles X contributed to the project.

The cathedral's name comes from a relic believed to be a fragment of the True Cross, brought to Orléans in the 4th century by Bishop Saint Euverte. The original church was reportedly built over the foundations of a Roman temple, making it one of the oldest continuously used Christian worship sites in France.
