About Hôtel Groslot
The Hôtel Groslot is a 16th-century Renaissance mansion built between 1549 and 1558 for Jacques Groslot, Royal Bailiff of Orléans, and designed by architect Jacques Androuet du Cerceau. Its red brick facade with diamond-pattern brickwork stands next to the Cathédrale Sainte-Croix on Place de l'Étape. The building gained historical weight in 1560 when King François II died here at age 16, just 17 months into his reign — his young wife Mary Queen of Scots was at his side.

As François II entered Orléans on 18 October 1560, his horse stumbled at the city gates — an omen that contemporaries noted with dread. Within seven weeks the young king was dead, having never recovered from a chronic ear infection that progressed to a brain abscess. His surgeons, including the famous Ambroise Paré, could do nothing to save him.
