About George V Bridge
The George V Bridge is a 325-meter stone arch bridge spanning the Loire River in central Orléans, built between 1751 and 1763 by engineer Jean Hupeau. Its nine basket-handle arches decrease slightly in span from the center toward the banks, creating a nearly flat profile that was considered a technical achievement for its time. Originally called the Pont Royal, it was renamed in 1914 to honor King George V of the United Kingdom as a gesture of Franco-British solidarity at the start of World War I.

The bridge is one of the rare French bridges named after a foreign monarch. The renaming in November 1914 was a political gesture by the Orléans city council to honor Britain's entry into World War I alongside France, just three months after hostilities began.
