About Saint-Liphard Collegiate Church of Meung-sur-Loire
This collegiate church in Meung-sur-Loire traces its origins to the 6th century, when Saint Liphard — a former judge and governor of Orléans — retired here as a hermit. The current building dates primarily from the 13th century, blending Romanesque foundations with Gothic additions including an elevated nave, enlarged choir, and expanded transepts. Attached to the western end stands the Tour Manassès, a fortified 12th-century episcopal tower built around 1160 by Bishop Manassès de Garlande, creating a rare example of defensive architecture integrated into a church.

In 1103, a rebel lord named Léon II de Meung seized the fortified enclosure around the church. When royal troops arrived to recapture it, Léon took refuge in the bell tower. The attackers set the tower ablaze, forcing the defenders to surrender. The church was rebuilt and solemnly reconsecrated in October 1104, barely a year later.
