About Beaugency Notre-Dame Abbey Church
This Romanesque abbey church dates to the late 11th century and was substantially rebuilt around 1140 in the regional Loire Valley style using local Beauce limestone. The choir, with its eleven round arches and three radiating chapels, is considered one of the finest examples of transitional Romanesque-Gothic architecture along the Loire. In 1152, an ecclesiastical council held here annulled the marriage of King Louis VII and Eleanor of Aquitaine — a decision that redirected the course of French and English history.

After the 1152 annulment, Eleanor of Aquitaine married Henry Plantagenet just eight weeks later. He became King Henry II of England in 1154, bringing the vast Duchy of Aquitaine under English control. This territorial shift was one of the principal triggers of the Hundred Years' War between France and England.
