About Château de Beaugency
This 11th-century castle in Beaugency was transformed in 2021 into a digital art center called Château de Lumières. The original Romanesque keep, known as the Tour de César, dates to around 1015–1030 and stands 36 meters tall, making it one of the oldest square donjons in France. Jean Dunois, companion-in-arms of Joan of Arc, rebuilt the residential quarters between 1450 and 1460 after the Hundred Years' War.

In 1291, the last lord of the Beaugency line, Raoul II, sold the castle to King Philippe IV (Philippe le Bel) for 5,400 livres. The castle controlled one of only a handful of bridges crossing the entire Loire river, making it a strategic military asset worth paying a premium for.
