Just thirty kilometres south-west of Orléans, the small Loire town of Beaugency packs a thousand years of history into a compact medieval centre. Start at the 26-arch bridge — one of the oldest Loire crossings, steeped in a legend that credits the Devil with its construction — then step into the 11th-century Château de Beaugency, now reborn as Château de Lumières, where immersive digital projections illuminate centuries of local history across the original stone walls. A short walk leads to the Abbatiale Notre-Dame, home to Romanesque capitals and a wooden vault so finely carved it could pass for stone; this is the very church where Eleanor of Aquitaine's first marriage was annulled in 1152. The day ends at the hollow shell of Caesar's Tower, a 36-metre keep dating from 1015 whose collapsed interior lays bare every era of its construction. The château is closed on Mondays and operates seasonally from April to November; Caesar's Tower is accessible only via the Castrum guided tour (Wednesday–Sunday, 15:15 or 16:15).
