About Beaugency Bridge
The Pont de Beaugency is one of the oldest surviving bridges over the Loire, first documented in 1145. Stretching 460 metres across the river on 24 arches, it connects the town of Beaugency to Lailly-en-Val and still carries road traffic today. The bridge's arches span centuries of construction — three pointed Gothic arches from the 14th century sit alongside 17th-century masonry vaults and a 30-metre navigable arch rebuilt in 1948.

According to local legend, the Devil himself built the bridge overnight in exchange for the soul of the first being to cross it. The clever townspeople sent a cat across instead. The furious Devil clawed the cat's face and vanished, which is said to explain why the inhabitants of Beaugency have been nicknamed "les Chats de Beaugency" (the Cats of Beaugency) ever since.
