About Meung-sur-Loire Old Town
The old town of Meung-sur-Loire is a compact medieval quarter centered around the Place du Martroi, where the castle and the Collégiale Saint-Liphard stand side by side. Narrow lanes like Rue Jehan-de-Meung are lined with half-timbered houses dating from the 15th to 17th centuries, and several buildings carry Historic Monument status. A network of canalized streams called les Mauves threads through the streets — originally dug by the monk Saint Liphard in the 6th century, these channels once powered 38 watermills.

The poet François Villon was imprisoned in the castle dungeons in 1461 by Bishop Thibault d'Aussigny. He described his captivity as "la dure prison de Mehun" and was only freed when the newly crowned Louis XI passed through the town and granted a general pardon. Villon disappeared from historical record shortly after, making Meung-sur-Loire one of the last documented stops in his life.
