About La Tanière Zoo-Refuge
La Tanière is a 20-hectare animal sanctuary near Chartres that houses around 600 rescued animals from over 70 species. Unlike traditional zoos, every resident here — from tigers and elephants to sea lions and primates — was either seized from illegal ownership, retired from circuses, abandoned, or rescued from laboratories. Founded by Patrick and Francine Violas, who invested approximately €30 million into building the facility, the refuge operates on three principles: rescue, care, and socialization.

The founders Patrick and Francine Violas built their fortune by selling 270 mobile phone shops to the French telecom operator SFR for approximately €330 million in 2009. They then invested around €30 million of that into creating La Tanière, making it one of the largest private investments in animal welfare in France.
