About Marmoutier Abbey
Marmoutier Abbey was founded in 372 AD by Saint Martin of Tours, who established a hermitage in caves carved into the tuffeau cliff along the Loire River. The monastery grew into one of the wealthiest and most influential abbeys in medieval Europe, controlling over 200 dependent priories across France and England at its peak. The site was destroyed by Normans in 853, rebuilt under Cluniac reform in 982, and ultimately closed during the French Revolution in 1790.
