About Dreux Old Town
The old town of Dreux sits along the Blaise River in a compact medieval district of narrow cobbled streets, half-timbered houses from the 15th and 16th centuries, and carved stone doorways. Place Métézeau serves as the central square, lined with colorful timber-framed buildings and café terraces. The 1512 Belfry, built in a mix of Gothic Flamboyant and Renaissance styles, stands as the only belfry of its kind in Eure-et-Loir and formerly housed the Town Hall.

The name "Dreux" likely derives from the Durocasses, the Gaulish tribe that occupied this area before the Roman conquest. The Latin form "Durocassio" gradually evolved through centuries of spoken French into the modern name. Some local legends instead attribute the name to a mythical figure called Drius who supposedly founded the settlement after a great flood.
