About Ecomuseum of Winegrowers and Artisans of Dreux
The Écomusée des Vignerons et Artisans Drouais occupies 12th-century troglodytic cellars carved by Cistercian monks beneath the former Priory of Saint-Thibault in Dreux. Founded in 1995 by the Flora Gallica association, the museum documents nearly 800 years of local winemaking and dozens of traditional crafts that have largely disappeared from the region. Visitors can explore reconstructed workshops of cobblers, clog makers, tile makers, and tanners, alongside viticulture tools spanning centuries.

The troglodytic cellars were originally dug in the 12th century not for wine storage but for marl extraction — a type of calcium-rich clay used as agricultural fertilizer. The Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Breuil-Benoît later repurposed these underground chambers for aging wine, a use that continued for centuries.
