About Royal Chapel of Saint Louis
The Royal Chapel of Saint Louis in Dreux serves as the burial place of the House of Orléans, a branch of the French royal family. Built in 1816 by Louise-Marie-Adélaïde de Bourbon-Penthièvre, who lost her husband to the guillotine during the Revolution, the chapel was originally a modest neoclassical structure. After her son Louis-Philippe became King of France in 1830, architect Pierre-Bernard Lefranc expanded it between 1839 and 1845 into a striking Neo-Gothic monument with a 25-meter dome.

Unlike most French royal burial sites that are historical relics, the Chapelle Royale de Dreux remains an active necropolis. Living descendants of the Orléans family are still buried here, making it one of the few functioning royal cemeteries in Europe.
