About Square Lucien Beaufrère
Square Lucien Beaufrère is a classified Art Deco public garden in Vierzon, set on an island between the Yèvre river and the Canal de Berry. Built in the early 1930s on the grounds of a former Benedictine abbey, it was designed by architect-sculptor Eugène-Henry Karcher as a pacifist war memorial garden honoring soldiers killed in World War I. The garden features a 25-metre ornamental basin, wrought iron railings decorated with doves and olive branches, and extensive DENBAC ceramic mosaics — colorful enamelled stoneware tiles produced by a celebrated Vierzon firm.

The DENBAC ceramics decorating the garden are now highly collectible Art Deco pieces. The name DENBAC comes from the founders' surnames — René Denert and René-Louis Balichon — who ran the factory in Vierzon. Their enamelled stoneware tiles cover walls, columns, and borders throughout the garden, making it one of the largest outdoor displays of DENBAC work still intact.
